I did a quick composite layup over an ABS core again in another attempt to use ABS as a soluble core material. This is drilling out the core to help with dissolution.
Layup was fully cured, for weeks. Composite submerged in Acetone.
After first round.
Fresh acetone.
Came out clean.
Surface finish from core is very rough, more rough than the core. Not sure why. It feels like bare fiber almost. Could the resin have mixed with the ABS during cure leaving it susceptible to dissolve in the Acetone ...leaving bare fibers?
The part felt weak too, almost soggy after a few days in a hot garage... not hard and crisp like a fully cured composite part.
Despite what the manufacturer says, I don't think the resin is completely resistant to Acetone. I'm not a chemist and I don't wish to be, so I'll simply not pursue this further. For now, I'll avoid ABS soluble cores for composite parts and not submerge my layups in Acetone.
